Flat pins, soft details, this looks like another reproduction. I was looking at one yesterday at the show and the size is also slightly off.

          Compare to good examples here...

Flat pins are not the norm, granted, and un sharp flat pins even worse, but are the details soft or does the photo have soft focus?

            Dave,
Are ALL flat pins repro? Were all police cap badges made with round pins? I am asking as I am a cloth guy basically and don't collect these but have never heard that only round pins are good.

Honestly, I did not understand, the original or not.

We are discussing it. Dave thinks it is a reproduction, Ron and I are not sure, we are still debating the fine points so that all may learn.
Dave is certainly better at these than I so I am awaiting his further comment.

                  Ron,
There are those flat pins again, but the eagle itself , particularly the obverse, could fool me. The reverse seems pretty rough, but it certainly seems to be stamped, not cast.

I'm not big on it, details are too poor. NJ

Bill, of course there is nothing absolute known to state that all flat pins are repro although flat pins on 1936-45 police insignia are common to repros and I consider one of several warning signs when viewing these (and of course one can also find plenty of repros with round pins too). Flat pins are common to 1934-36 pol insignia and then they were not with 1936-45 pol insignia, so I suspect something may have been detailed per regulation that basically all known legit police insignia manufacturers (I have something like 50'ish unique makers) went to round pins or was simply attributed to a change in materials used and where we start seeing the 'pressed in' pins.

With the first example posted, there is combination of red flags that led me to believe it is a repro and I should have also mentioned materials used in construction. With the second posted by Ron, this one muddies the water and I am unsure of materials used and possible replacement pins. Then we are just working with pictures and it's difficult to have that feel of certainty...really, it's a lot like collecting cloth, always better to see things in hand!

Unfortunately, repros are abundant and have been for years. With something that typically costs only between $25-$50 for known original examples with little change in value for so-called variations, I would suggest sticking with those good ones.

Thanks for the detailed reply. As mentioned I don't really collect these so any help is appreciated. Indeed, cloth has been so diluted with reproductions lately it is becoming nearly impossible to stay on top of it. Your advice of sticking with 'KNOWN" good examples applies to cloth eagles even more so.

                        Regards,
                        Bill U

I doubt that this will help much, I guess I haven't photographed my silver colored one piece ones yet so this is the only later style police eagles yet. However, this one is the only one I can show right now.

Flat prongs not unusual for two piece eagles...
