I picked up a very unusual item recently and need a little help on the history.....back during the 1930s....the Germans collected every winter for the needy..it was called WINERHILFE....I just came into posession of one of the metal cans used on the street corners...its red metal...has a lid on hinges...which can be locked.....and has slots for paper money and also one for coins....its painted a dark red....has raised initials WHN which are on what appears to be a three leaf clover ...which is painted White..and it has a handle on the back....I believe the WH stands for WINTERHILFE...but anyone know what the N would be for......NORD.?...for North....I appreciate any input on this subject....if I knew how to post pictures would do so.....anyway.....any opinions and help appreciated.....Hans

Hans,
WHN is not German but Dutch and is WinterHulp Nederland.
WinterHulp Nederland started october 22 1940 by rijkscommissaris Seyss-Inquart and was ment for collecting money and supplies for the needed.
WHN started as a neutral party, but when prominent NSB (Nationaal Socialistische Beweging-National Socialist Movement) party members became member of WHN, the Dutch people knew what they where dealing with and the collecting was not very succesfull.
Promotional posters were often painted over with frases.
A funny one is this one:Nog geen knoop van mijn gulp voor de Winterhulp!
(Not even a button from my fly for WHN!)
If you send me your E-mail adress I wil send some pictures back if You want, because I can't post pictures also.
Jan
