    Police stuff

    Hello collectors!

    I want to start this new thread with a white summertunic of the 'Verkehrspolizei'. I searched books and the internet about it and found only little information (2 pictures but not in detail). Can someone tell we if it's genuine?

    I have doubts about the red eagle as well.

    Here are some pictures:

    Inside on the right side there is a little pocket:

    Reversed tunic:

    Marking SB Ost:

    Your doubts about the red eagle are correct, it's a reproduction currrently in the market (I forget by whom, maybe someone will recognize the pics?) The repro pattern eagles come in many in many colors, I have multiple others saved, and here are two examples.

      What do you think about the tunic? It has different features then the two threads you have mentioned. Nothing indicates on collar tabs. What about the little pocket at the bottom inside the jacket, right side? This should be a good reference I hope.

      Holes for belt hook supports are present but no rear support buttons...

        I think that the tunic may be military, but not police. Police tunics did not have pleated lower pockets. Tabs were not worn.

        That said these traffic tunics are so rare I have never seen one. A few guys here have examples, such as JoeW and Orpo, maybe they can comment.

        As Dave said, the eagle is a newer reproduction.

          The tunic appears to be postwar from what I can see. The construction of the belt loop tabs is typical of postwar tunics and the shoulder boards should be removable and not sewn in.

            Hello guys,

            thank you for your input so far!

            I looked in one of my books again (Deutsche Polizei Uniformen by Dieter Deuster). I know the book has his flaws but the picture I found is very similar to my piece, detail is bad though.

            Some pros and cons:

            I read the text carefully and it is mentioned that there are no buttons on the back.

            On the other hand it's indicated that the shoulder boards are 'aufgesteckt' - 'slipped on', not sawn. But if I read the chapter about the shoulder boards - I quote: 'Die vorgeschriebene Befestigungsart wurde jedoch häufig nicht beachtet'...
            Translated it means something like 'The prescribed way of attachement was often not followed'.

            On each shoulder there is a button, not visible due to the shoulder boards.

            The eagle is 'brandnew'.

            As mentioned - (if original) this piece is very rare so I have nothing to compare it with.

            I think it's worth to investigate more and I don't dismiss it as a 'fraud' for now (except the eagle).

            If you know someone who has the original tunic please contact them! Thanks again!

            Regards

            Michael

              You are saying that your tunic has no rear belt support buttons, but are there slots provided to install them? They are essential to a true Verkehrspolizei tunic according to contruction specifications.

                Hello again,

                I've sent some emails to different german police-museums and german collectors and received an answer of one of them.

                The guy is a collector of post-war policetunics - his website is:
                http://hanssteinmueller.de.tl/Home.htm

                He told me the following:
                the cut of the tunic can be seen until early postwar (sawn in shoulderboards, inner belt and holes for the bucklebelt are prove of that);
                the small pocket at the front right hand side is for a bandage - never thought of that;
                the buttons were easy to exchange for washing - never thought of that either;
                he does not dismiss the tunic as a fake but warned me about movie/theater-productions;
                after the war 'the occupying forces' put their mark on the policeuniforms what caused them to change over time.

                Regards

                Michael

                  Hi,

                  what do you mean with rear belt support buttons? My english isn't always that good . Do you mean two buttons on the back like at the front or support for the belt (koppelriemen)? On each side of the waist there are holes/slots for supporting the belt.

                    Hello guys,

                    I searched all the internet, books and other documentation to find a original sleeve-eagle for the summer traffic-tunic. I found no decent picture to post here except this:

                    The first picture is an eagle which is for sale on militaria321.com - sold as an copy:

                    The second picture is the eagle sawn onto the tunic:

                    There is a clear difference in quality but the pattern is, as I see it, identical. I guess it must be a 'pimped' copy.

                      To clarify a bit. The white tunics were worn by the traffic police for better visibility, they were not summer tunics. They were worn during traffic related duties, normal SchuPo tunics were worn at other times.

                      There have been quite a few good red eagles posted on this forum. Do a search and you should find the threads. I know I posted a couple under the NCO sleeve eagle thread pinned at the top of this section.

                      Regards,
