    1940 Garmisch Winter Games Plaque

    Hi
I wonder if anyone might be able to shed some light on a large metal plaque which I recently aquired. It measures 90mm in diameter and on one side has an Eagle with a shield beneath and around the outside has the wording:
International Winter Sports Woche 1940, Garmisch Partenkirchen. The reverse just has a large Swastika.
Ovbiously the games never took place but my question is were these produced in large quantities as I've never seen one before.
Any information would be a appreciated.

I think they did take place, but obviously, the number of countries taking part would be somewhat limited.

      Robbo:
How about a picture of the plaque. I have a HJ badge from the 1941 competition, that was the 6th meeting, that I will post. If there were games in 1941, there must of been games in 1940. This was the location of the Winter Olympics in 1936, which was number 1.

Yes, they took place - just 5 miles from my home

          Hi
The reason I thought they had been cancelled was after reading the entry on Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1940_Winter_Olympics
This states that they had been cancelled due to the outbreak of War. Obviously they've got this wrong then.
I've attached photos of the plaque.

            Hi,

the Winter Olympics 1940 had been cancelled, first for Sapporo (Japan), next for St.Moritz (Switzerland) and last for Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany.

The medal is for the IV. (4th) Internationale Wintersportwoche in 1940.

It was not the compensation for the cancelled 1940 Winter Olympics.

No, they normally had been engraved for the winners in the different competitions:

Thank you for your help Uwe. It would'nt appear that these are particulary rare.
