    German Lifesaving Medal 1937 (Rettungsmedaille)

My research on this forum seems to confirm that this apparently rare award is a period original. The example shown is an official issue by the Prussian State Mint in silver (hallmarked accordingly on the lower rim). It measures 25mm across.

    Opinions will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    John

        Hello John,

in my opinion that is not an original medal but a cast copy. If you compare it with original medals you will there find razorsharp details and a "mirrored" background of the surface.

        All that is missing here.

I remember having seen this exact medal at ebay from a dealer "me-1963" - is it from there?

        Best Regards

Thank you for your feedback, Max. I have been awaiting some opinions and appreciate yours.

For comparison, I have looked for but not found much in the way of images of originals of this medal. Perhaps others could post one or more here, please, for that purpose.

With your comments in mind, I have to say that in-hand and under magnification, the details of mine certainly do appear to be pretty crisp and sharp and look very much like a minted coin with a light patina on the surface.

I have attempted to take new pictures to the best of my ability with my digital camera and present them here for additional assessment. The glare caused by the "mirrored" background of the surface does not photograph well.

This item was acquired by me as part of a larger collection back in the 1980s. I do not know from what source the owner of that collection acquired this award but I don't think e-Bay was in existence at that time. The moniker of the e-Bay seller to whom you refer is certainly unknown to me.

I look forward to and welcome all additional comment from any collectors that are knowledgeable of this particualr uncommon award.

          John

Bringing this thread to the top in the hope that there might be some additional feedback as to period originality or not of the piece shown.

              Thanks in advance,

John, I’m not an expert on these, but I agree with Ironfist. Looks good.

Thank you both - ironfist and Volksturmer - for your feedback.

Stay away from this one, as the pictures clearly show its not coinstruck as should be but a cast fake.

                              nice

now we can see it against an original I can see the difference.
Great learning kurb that one did me.
Thanks for the help and info.
                              Regards Pete
