    Police -- Verkehrspolizei white tunic?

This is the second time I'm posting in this sub-forum so please excuse me if I ask ridiculous questions. Let me add that I tried to do my homework before posting by using the search function on here and consulting Deuster's new Polizei book. Unfortunately, I didn't get any further --- that's why I'm hoping to profit from your knowledge.

What I have here is a stripped white tunic that came from the estate of a fomer police NCO who served in the TR era. I thought I may have a Verkehrspolizei tunic but then I realized that there was absolutely no evidence of shoulder boards ever on this thing. Furthermore, there are signs of collar tabs and an outlet for an edged weapon (both of which shouldn't be there, correct)?

I would very much appreciate some input on what I actually have here. Is this even real?

Thank you for your time! Kurt

          Hello,

You are correct that NO collar tabs were worn by the traffic police. The shoulder boards were always the slip on type to my knowledge. Also the pleated lower pockets does not follow the "typical" police pattern. Nor does the simple vent and two piece back construction, although this is not unheard of on later tunics. The 4 button open collar is OK. The "ghost" of a sleeve eagle is very convincing and the soiling certainly looks natural.

Personally the stamp seems "overdone". Looks too bright and the purple ink seems "off" to me. All of that said I have never owned one of these and my comments are all supposition.

My opinion is that the tunic was used post war, if not post war made, which would explain the collar tabs. Of course there were white summer tunics used by other branches that DID wear tabs. I think it all depends on whether or not others find the points I make off putting or not.

These tunics are extremely rare. I know JoeW and George on the forum have examples perhaps they will comment.

          Regards,
          William Unland

Thanks for taking the time to comment on this. That was already pretty helpful. Were there other TR branches that could have worn collar tabs and have a police stamp inside?

I agree the ghost on the sleeve looks convincing, at the same time, this very fact makes it impossible that it was worn post-war, doesn't it?

            Thanks again... Kurt

Were the button stripped off the tunic too or are there slots for removable ones? I believe it to be post war...traffic of course. Can't see a place to attach belt hook supports or rear support buttons? Pocket flaps and lapels are tailored incorrectly. The sleeve insignia pattern could as easily have been made by the insignia of W.German state police would would probably have worn his sidearm by attachment through the pocket rather than on an over-belt. Don't care for the marking either Bill.

I am not convinced this jacket is original, period, for a start the pockets are squared off, the date stamping is a big NO for me and all looks too clean a fresh.

JoeW, there are slots for removable buttons but there is definitely no place to attach belt hook supports or rear support buttons.

Sorry I ment to say I am UNconvinced this jacket is original. This jacket has been made to deceive in my opinion.

Thanks everyone for taking your time to have a look at this. I think the consensus is that is not a TR period item but at best an "original post war police jacket" with a fake stamp. Did I forget something?

Or it could be a waiter's jacket from a cruise ship?
