Hello Gentlemen,
I recently dug this little treasure out of storage. A friend is working on a new reference book on the WW2 German Police. I thought he might like to add this to his book as an example of a WW2 German Police pistol.

The pistol has all matching numbers and is at 90%+ bluing. It is accompanied by 2 magazines who’s serial numbers match the pistol and its maker marked and 1942 dated holster which is also serial numbered to the pistol.

It just does not get any better than this.

I would appreciate your comments and your opinion on a fair market value.

A nice first style (Variation1) Sauer 38H police contract produced near the end of the serial number run for this variation. It is a blued variation with a checkered magazine release button. There were 30,000 police pistols produced in this variation before the 2nd variation with a military finish of another run of 30,000 was produced. There was a 3rd police variation of around 10,000 produced without a safety late in the war. A nice example of this police pistol.

this is what Jan C. still told the world over 20 years ago. Since then, some better books regarding Sauer pistols were issued. Still’s info regarding the Sauers can be regarded as being outdated since then.

Pardon me, but the pistol is an early third variation of the 38/H with police acceptance. Not more, not less. Approximately 1/3 of all Sauer Hs from app. 270,000 up to 506xxx do have police acceptance marking e/C or e/F.

Yes, that variation designation is indeed Jan Still's scale. The serial number is on the cusp of his variation 1 & 2 changeover. I agree that the changes are probably not as distinct as Jan has drawn them but all these "variations" are just arbitrary collector categories. That is to say that Sauer never used such nomenclature during the time of use, did they? They were also all simply called "Die Pistole Sauer & Sohn, Modell 38 (S.&S.M.38)" in police manuals such as Fischer.

That is correct! Sauer called it simply a “Modell 38” until Feb. 1940 and from then on “Modell H”. At the Army it was only a “Sauer & Sohn Modell H”, while the police called it “Modell 38” like you said.

Sauer never made any distinctions between the different variations, except the early ones having no thumb safety.

That is correct also. And there are several “systems” to distinguish between the different variations. Still’s system is a little bit problematic, as he isn’t considering the first app. 10,000s, simply, because these are all “commercial” variations. So, he starts with those having police or army acceptance.
