    Polizei Oberstleutnant Tunic

    Hi All -

I deviated from my normal collecting area of Heer officer items when I saw this tunic. It is an issue piece dated 1938 that the officer undoubtedly used for a daily service tunic. No other insignia was ever on the tunic. The condition is really beautiful with only a few small areas of critter tracking on the left sleeve.

I would appreciate any comments or opinions on the sleeve eagle as I do not have great expertise on these.

The Herr Oberstleutnant apparently liked to eat - the tunic is probably a size 40L in US sizing. Here is the sleeve eagle:

What is the lining material made of Don? Rayon? It has that sheen.

              Hi Joe -

I am not certain, but it looks like "shiny cotton" to me. It is dated 1938 to a Schweinfurt tailor - I couldn't get good scans of the markings - I may try in better light this afternoon.

                ..sorry, reconsidered my post...

Don't know why I can still edit this.....obviously a program glitch...

Anyway I think it unfair to leave an open comment as it might give the wrong impression.

Firstly, very nice high ranking police tunic.

As an sleeve eagle collector i can offer some comments about your eagle. It is an odd one. It has some very unusual characteristics BUT it is very well and neatly executed and it is NOT like any reproduction that I am familiar with. It "looks" like it belongs on your high ranking tunic

In my opinion it could be original to the tunic, but it is an odd one that I might hesitate about if offered to me without context.

I know this doesn't help much, but these officer's eagles are both one of the most magnificent and beautiful of TR insignia, and also the hardest to authenticate. Because there was no RZM or depot authority to control these officer's eagles, every single one is different from every other and in my opinion it really boils down to gut feeling with many of these. If the tunic was mine I would leave it alone, because I just have nothing to "prove" this eagle bad.

                Best regards,
                Bill Unland

                    Hi Don,

It is a very nice Officers tunic with a really beautiful Police Officer's eagle. If you ever get tired of it please drop me a line as I have been looking for a nice one just like it.
                    My best,
                    Vince

Hi Don, nothing wrong with deviation and a high ranking Schupo to boot! Appears he wore a monster of a ribbon bar! Any provisions or signs of badges? Screw down button posts on the ranks straps? By chance, would the tailor's tag be named and is it inside the interior pocket? The sleeve eagle is also an odd one to me and of course I'd have to agree with Bill about the rest of what he said so no use repeating. Although, I will add that here is another with example with double cord strands used in the wings instead of one and it appears the "highlight" strand through the center of the wreath has been worn down to the cord, is that correct?

                        Hi Dave -

The cord through the wreath is a little worn, but not as bad as it appears in the scan. The tunic itself is an issue tunic from a Schweinfurt tailor - no name tag, unfortunately. No loops for medals at all. It is also stamped PO 1938. The wool is a higher quality than a lot of issue tunics I have seen, probably due to the relatively early date of manufacture.

Don, you mention the tunic is marked from a Schweinfurt tailor, yet has Po 1938 markings. Is it stamped PO 1938 or Po 1938? Is the tailor marking just ink stamped or is there a tailor label sewn to the lining somewhere? Do the tail flaps have rear pockets in the inside edge? Cam you provide some additional close-up photos like you mentioned earlier?

                            Hi Joe -

It is a tailor's stamp - it is not private-purchase. It does have the two "glove pockets" in the rear skirt. I will try to shoot some more pics this evening when I get off work.

A few more pics - I was wrong on it being tailored in Scheinfurt - it is from Wiesbaden. The tialor was Johan SHweinger so I must have confused it. Anyhoo, here's some more pics:
