Good Books?

Can anyone suggest some good books that could assist me in the collection of police badges and insignia? I educated myself fairly well in the firearms area of my collecting (p38's lugers,German pistols in general) through the use of books and the advice fo "buy a gun buy a book".

I think it is time to make an investment in some educational books in the police area. I know this is a wide open question so feel free to give your opinions.

I do not do much in the cloth area mostly cap badges, medals, pins, knives . I am looking for a general police equipment book, something on badges, Unit insignia or badges. whatever I spend on a book I know I will save if it keeps me from getting burned on a fake or fantasy piece. thank you for the help frank v.

Unfortunately I can not recommend any English language books as reference for police cloth collecting. Since this was a relatively "undesirable" area of collecting until VERY recently there has been little written on the subject.

Thanks Bill, I am ordering the first and second volumes from Bender today.


As far as any kind of TR cloth items go, I have learnee to have it checked before putting out any money for it. Either on this forum by way of pictures or by friends at the shows. It is just to hard in todays market.

Those 2 volumes are outstanding. I am partial to the first one. They may be the only ones that cover as much in such detail. You can get specific books, such as the ID disks, swords, etc. Papers also.

Hi Frank, it is unfortunate to say but there is not a good reference on police insignia at this point. Sure the Bender series is about the best out there at this time on the subject of polizei, although volume two contains multiple reproduction insignia. So be warned, it's not a fail proof guide to collecting insignia. About the best reference is studying and asking at the forum here.
