    Hi,

that is the German Handball (team handball, indoor handball, 7 players):

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_handball

In the twenties and the thirties they played only field handball, 11 players on the normal field for football (soccer):

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_handball

After WW II we played both, field handball in the summertime and indoor handball in the wintertime.
    Later only indoor handball.

Indoor handball is a very hard and rough sport, harder than American Football.

    Uwe

                Gerd,

Thanks for posting a selection of my Polizei-sport goodies. The first item is an 800 silver cigarette box that was given as first prize in the obstacle course. This is a Wehrsport event where policemen with full packs run a timed course over walls, water, etc.

The second item is a broadside for a 1936 Sportfest involving equestrian, motorcycle, and police dog events, among others. I think it is a great graphic with the non-existant 1934 Tschako eagle that artistic license created.

The third item is a Berlin Polizei Sport Verein medal awarded for competition at the Police Sports Hall in Berlin.

The fourth items are the equivilent to American baseball cards. These cigarette cards show members of the Saxon Police Soccer teams. Each card has the policeman's photo on the front and stats, club logos, and other information on the other side. You could collect the whole set if you bought enough cigarettes to keep your cigarette box full.

The final items are a pennant for participants in the 1932 Police Road Rally held in Bavaria. Other motor sport events were held throughout Germany that were sponsored by various police departments. The enamel version of the pennant star was presented to those who finished the race. It could be affixed to the car radiator as a radiator badge or I have seen them worn on the kidney belt of motorcyclists. I have a photo album of a Prussian motorcycle policeman who participated in one of these events (with his wife riding behind as navigator) and his pennant was attached from the handlebars to the front fork of his motorcycle for the race.

                George

.....and a special awards for this day (which has nothing to do with wining the German Police championships!)

                    Reichspräsident medal of honor

Bronce medal for the 2rd place, silver 1st, 3rd got a document only.

This one went to a Police officer after his 2nd place by a big sport meeting in north Germany (book "die Preussische Polizei")
