All of these Photos are graphic evidence of the Key Role played by the RAD, in the war in the East!
Without the Infrastructure Support of the RAD - Troops & Supplies would have never made it to the
Front - & likewise, the Wounded & Resupply & Repair Operations, would have never made it back
to 'friendly' areas. I am struck by the youthful ages of some of the RAD men! They look like kids -
18-19 year olds (which they were!) Superb Photos! ... Txs, Dave/dblmedComment

Hello Dave,
they were definately put to good use i think,it freed up soldiers who otherwise would have to do the crappy labor jobs unloading ammo,digging defensive postions etc,the military ultimately used them as a source of reserves as well and transferred whole RAD abteilung right into the army/luftwaffe and sent them directly to the front.here are some more RAD PK photos-Comment

Yancy - Amazing Photos! Love Photo #56, as it graphically SHOWS the RAD's life at, or
very near to the Front - Pick-Axes over one shoulder & a Rifle over the other shoulder!
That tells us a LOT! Yes, there was the "Front" in Russia, but no area was really 'safe'
due to Partisan activity!
The more that we study Photos & documented WWII History, the more that it becomes
very clear - that 'Auxiliary' Organizations (Never intended for Combat / near Combat
use) like the RAD (as well as the TeNo to a lesser extent) were placed there, in the
midst of it all.
Lack of German manpower necessitated these unintended uses of the RAD men!
"Defending the Reich" - Bender / Littlejohn (RIP) showed us some RAD
units which were taken into the Luftwaffe as FLAK groups! (Which I found amazing!)

Very interesting and inforative thread! There is my small contribution. Though this photo was taken in Germany - this is a very famous (over former USSR at least) Soviet propaganda photo that was published in many books dedicated to WW2 and battle of Berlin. One of the last defenders killed close to Branderburg Gate ....
