    unknown edelweiss to ID

This edelweiss was given to me for free and it belongs to a lot found here, some years ago, in an old german forwarder's warehouse. Previous finds were period german tropical headgear and more.
I never saw anything like that before, it resembles the classic ww2 edelweiss (same size as well) but it has a quite odd clasp on the back.
One theory is that they were period edelweiss for some sport organisation.
    Ideas?

could it have been converted to a buckle?

        Hallo Ernst,

it might well be, by looking at the back. but it would be a very small buckle indeed! It has the same size of a standard metal edelweiss for the bergmütze, so pretty small.

Perhaps it was designed to fit over a stiff hatband? Two piece construction. Cast zinc or what? Silver wash? Perhaps the slot was meant to hold something after it was attached to the hat? No markings it looks like.
