    Hi Marcus,

After spending many a year as a policeman, you tend to remember faces pretty well. On seeing the Soldbuch for the first time, I knew straight away that I had seen the guy before and it didn't take too long to put two and two together.

Before I let you know, I had to be certain that they were the same person, even though I personally was 90% sure they were due to many facial similarities. I contacted the forums very own Max History, who we know is very knowledgeable regarding photographic and autograph ID. Max confirmed that in all probability it was the same person, taking into account the different angles etc.

I would have let you know sooner but as you know, I was banned for a month for supposed "infractions!" I also wanted to have this in hand before shooting from the hip.

This is an exceptionally rare Soldbuch and I was very fortunate to get it. This is only the second Gestapo issued SB I have ever seen. Paid a little more than I wanted to initially, but considering I already own a Kripo SB and WP, a SD SB & WP and a Gestapo WP, I only needed this to complete the set. It was also made worthwhile by the inclusion of the SB notice regarding his use of plain clothes, a form which I have never seen before.

It is possible that Otto served in a Gestapo capacity overseas but I do not think this was the specific reason for his SB issue. It was decreed by Himmler, June '44, that all Polizei members were authorised to carry a W-SS Soldbuch. Interestingly, the other Gestapo SB and my Kripo SB, were also issued October 1944. This leads me to think that there may be another decree stipulating that members of the SiPo use this style SS SB, whilst members of the Orpo use the later beige "thin" style.

With regards to his rank, if we believe that the SB pic was only taken in Oct '44 specifically for his SB, and that your pic was taken late '44 as well, then he appears to have lost weight and aged in the 2 month period, as well as being promoted. However, it is possible that the SB pic was taken upon promotion to Kr.O.ASS or SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer which could have been several months prior to the issue of the SB. As this was the rank held at the time of the SB issue, this photo was used.

Whatever the case, it certainly looks like whilst he was operating as a Gestapo officer in plain clothes, he was promoted to SS-Sturmscharfuhrer, which caused him to have a picture taken with this new rank by slipping a tunic over his civilian clothes. A tunic which may even have been borrowed from someone else of the same rank for that purpose which may explain the reason why there are two different styles of insignia. The note authorising civilian clothes still indicates his Gestapo rank as Kriminal Oberassistant in Feb '45, which is perfectly feasible. A Kr.O.ASS could be either a SS-Hscha or a SS-Stuscha.

Glad you like it Marcus, I thought you might.

      Excellent!

I don't know how long it would have taken me to notice that your SB and my portrait are one and the same person. Looking at each feature of his face, it is the same man or a twin. Differences in age, weight, lighting, angle of shot, etc., explains why ID was not immediately noticed, by me
      anyway.

Max is extremely good with faces and names, you could not have picked a better person for a second opinion, IMO.

Many factors could account for the change of tunic, insignia, etc. and your explaination sounds the most likely. Time and time again, German military men "borrowed" caps, tunics and other items from close associates for their portraits on "Picture Day."

I love the fact that you guessed it right when you stated that he "could be a plain clothed Official, who merely slipped into a tunic and cap, just for the photograph"

I bet that the larger portrait of Otto Krietemeyer was taken as a passport foto, and was probably used on his 1945 Gestapo Dienstausweis.
Would it not be grand to find his Dienstausweis too!

Good to have you back on the Forum Graham, I thought you must have been on holiday. I still cannot believe it was for the reason you stated!!!! Regardless, Welcome back my friend!!!

Again Graham, thank you so very much for sharing your wonderful documents with me and other's, here on the forum. You really made my day!

      Best Wishes,

      Marcus

Unfortunately not Jimmy. As with most SiPo issued SB, there are only a few entries, mostly kit issue.

Oh my goodness, I have not checked the forum all weekend and missed these uniforms. Really, really nice material gents, I can only dream of owning one someday!
Knowing the history behind many of these uniforms, I can only imagine the fear that Germany's enemies must have felt when seeing one. Thank you for sharing.

The SS helmets look great too by the way, makes me want to start a Polizei combat helmet thread, (since I don't own an SS helmet)

                    Regards,

                    Marcus

                      Graham,

Ive found a bit more about Krietemeyer. Seems he was part of the Staff of Arbeitseriehungslager (Labor education camp) Hoennetal. Krietemeyer is mentioned several times in an excerpt from the book "700 Jahre Beckum - Die Geschichte eines Dorfes im Sauerland" by Peter Witte.

Read more about Hoennetal (Sanssouci) camp, including Krietemeyer's service at the camp:

                      http://www.plettenberg-lexikon.de/be...lbe1/witte.htm

For those interested, but don't speak German, use the link above through Google Translate.

The camp was very bad and there were many "on the run" shootings, executions by firing squad and hangings. The camp leader, Kriminalobersekretaer u. SS Sturmscharfuehrer, Karl Gertenbach was described as "a man of unprecedented cruelty and violence, feared by even his own men. A 'fat pig' who was responsible for excesses and crimes in the camp."

                      Best Regards,

                      Marcus

                          Glad to help.

This is probably how Krietemeyer ended the war, though with all of the diseases one can only guess at this point--

Mass killings by 150 Dortmund Gestapo execution commandos in 1945 described in this link:
                          http://www.monoculartimes.co.uk/city...und/1945.shtml

                          (in english, see March/April 1945)

                          Rgds,
                          Marcus

                            Stefano,

Are these tunics different...or do you just wind up talking everyone out of their uniforms? Very, very nice!
