    Police Shako

Hey guys this is my only original WW2 Shako which is dated 1938 on the inside of sweatband. It does have some remnants of green wool around the top / air holes/ and base. I was wondering if one it was stripped for post war use and two if its worth restoring to WW2? If so what would be best Black paint or try to find someone who could re cover it? I only paid $50.00 for it which I think was a good deal.
    Thanks
    Joe

I think you paid too much!

Impossible to tell if used in post war period, abused after returning with the vet or recently found in a closet in Germany. Post war use involved removing the III Reich emblem. Sometimes the green wool was painted black. But the original chin strap was used. It looks like yours was moth food.

      I wouldn't bother painting it.

Max, Joe is correct. Save your effort and time. It will never be correct. Do what KLR said and put it on E bay and move on.

Yep, that one is in rather tough shape to restore. You may find restoration could be rather expensive, especially of the parts missing. Regardless, it's never going to look right and that will be something you'll have to live with if you choose to. Or as the others suggested, move it along on eBay where you might find a little profit with crazy bidders.

Who would be so stupid to bid that much money on an absolute POS??? It was only months ago when I had to part with a near mint exmaple for as little as $550. Hmmm, $552 paid for a black other ranks cartouche box that some fool opened to photograph and broke the seem??? This only makes me think some thing is not on the up and up with this place. One good thing is that it's a place to study reproductions.

I agree with everyone elses assessment. Toss it up on E-Bay for what you paid for it, and then save the money to invest in a better piece.

By the time you try to ad-hoc repair it, add the missing pieces, your just gonna be flushing money down the drain.

You're better off waiting for a nice example to come up on the e-stand.

Now as for the Manion's one................. what can I say besides "a fool and his money...."

                      IMHO,
                      Andrew
