    What is it?

Greetings; I posted this uniform in the wehrmacht section, and was gratefully advised by jhodgson to post it in the police section. I have had this tunic for quite a while....discovered insignificantly at a flea market. I think it is a fantasy, but being priced right bought it for the sleeve eagle, buttons and medal bar. It shows honest wear and repair on the collar and interior, but not being a tunic collector have no ideawhat it is. All comments and opinions welcomed. Best Regards!

                    mottled

Interesting tunic! If it was a closed neck cut it would be very desirable. The material is correct for WW2 Polizei in so-called "mottled" Polizei cloth but I believe this material was also used post war... Because of its "V'" neck cut, (permanently open neck design) its hard to judge for me... but I am leaning towards post war manufacture because of that feature and "beautified" with an added sleeve eagle, but I hope I'm wrong. It does not appear to have ever had any shoulderboards...is that correct? any sign of loops, buttons being removed or seams stitched shut?
The sleeve eagle is good so if it gets the thumb down and you paid a "sleeve eagle price" you still did OK, if the final verdict is good, you did even better! Nick

Greetings Nick: Thanks for the input. You are correct in that this tunic has never had shoulder boards,no sign of loops, bottons being removed or seams being sewn up.

                        Hello,

The open collar, 4 button front, angled pockets, and slash lower pockets are characteristic of post war police tunics.

The mottled or "flecked" cotton was used before the war as well as after. I believe it is still used as it is a traditional summer material.

There has been some discussion about open collared summer tunics , but I believe the concensus has been that they were NOT regulation, for what that is worth. The only example I own has a closed collar so I will have to defer to those more familiar with these type of tunics to make a final determination.

                        Regards,
                        Bill Unland

                          Zeke,

This appears to be a postwar police tunic with an added sleeve eagle to me from the pictures. Can you show a shot of the belt hook straps under the arms? That should tell the tale.

                              Zeke,

West German Police belt hook straps are often distinctive in that they are usually made with thin material with the bottom folded over and sewn together making a rib of material (if that makes sense). Yours are not made like that.

Yours are made out of HBT like the pockets and seam coverings. This is more in line with NS type straps but I think your tunic is postwar due to the cut. The open collar, slash lower pockets, and lack of shoulderboards is typical for postwar police tunics. Sometimes you can find postwar police markings on these tunics in the form of a black rubber stamp in a rectangular box or a sewn on white almost square label.
