I posted pix of a Gendarmerie visor/overcoat I just picked up in the headgear section. BTW, did Gendarmerie always have the brown trim on the epaulette?

Hello,
The brown trim denoted a "war time" commission, like a "brevet" rank in the US. Officer's boards without the brown trim were career officers, ie; came up through the ranks the hard way and were not "for the duration of hostilities" but would retain their rank after the war. So yes Gendarm officers could have the brown trim or not depending on their status.
