Agreed, there is always the chance that this insignia is from an "as yet" unknown maker. We certainly are all "students" in this hobby and have the possibility each and every day of learning something new.

That being said, we also know that they do fake these items as well. So we must always remember that in the back of our mind when evaluating an item.

(BTW Bill, that is one ugly reproduction patch !!! )

Not knowing anything about hat construction, I can't add anything useful in that area.

But I do believe these threads allow us all the opportunity to learn more about our fields of collecting.

      Her are some additional pictures.

The general construction of the hat seems to be good according to the hat guys on the headgear forum. However, no one on the headgear forum has commented on the insignia.

Is there anyway to provide a good closeup of the patch ?

I've recently seen that this piece was discussed before and if the hat is being green-lit, it would be nice to see detailing on the eagle patch.

Us Eagle Weenies are always looking for new fix's

Especially one that seems to fall into that "exception" area.

                  Hello,

I see nothing that would suggest to me that it is a reproduction. That is only my opinion, one of many I'm afraid.

                  Regards,

                    Steve,

I do see what worries Gary about the insignia in the photograph. The X tie at the bottom of the wreath is not "normal" or "textbook" for soft cap police eagles. That is not to say that some manufacturer did not make one like this during the period.

I do have an identical bevo police trap with this X tie at the bottom. It came from a picker who supposedly got it from a vet (that's the story anyway) along with some other insignia that was perfectly good. The other police trap in this lot was of the "normal" construction without the X at the bottom. So, I would say that the cap looks original to me, even with the insignia being a red flag because it is not textbook.

                      Hey everyone,

I found this police insignia which is a match to the M43 police hat I was interested in. What are your thoughts on this?

                          Steve,

The eagle you show is not quite identical to the one on the cap. The legs are thicker and have X marks on them and large X marks on the chest continuing into the neck and head. The eagle on the cap (and mine) do not have those features.

The patch I have is identical to the one on the cap. The back is different from this one as well in that the red is much deeper and there is no black below the cockade on the back nor a black string line between the cockade and the wreath.

I believe the patch on the cap and the one I have are odd (not "textbook") and are probably original. I don't know about the loose one you have just shown. What is its origin?

                            SCHUPO,

I was surfing the internet and found this on the Manion website.

Manion's lists this particular bevo insignia as original, but you know how that goes. They also show an embroidered cap insignia of this type on wool that they list as a reproduction. The wool reproduction also has the X at the bottom of the wreath. They also have a bullion one on a piece of cap that I don't car much for that has the thick legs and V or X marks that continue off the chest into the neck and legs like the one that you show from Manion's above.

These things get more tricky every year. I do think that the one on the cap has a chance though.
