Are there any records about the WWII era German Red Cross still in existence and available for research? Here is a picture of the Berchtesgaden Red Cross Unit in the late 1930s. The man at the head is my grandfather Josef Meier. Some time during the war he was awarded some sort of decoration which my mother first heard about in school when her classmates congratulated her about it. Granddad was very anti-Nazi, never wore the medal and my mom thought he simply threw it away! Is there anyway to find out what the award was? Thanks, Fred

Zooming In
Hi Fred,
Do you have the ability to scan the photo of your grandfather at a much higher resolution? By zooming in on those badges we might be able to figure out what it is.
I don't think that there are any photos known of a person wearing the Alpine Red Cross badge that Diane posted, and lots of folks say that this badge is a fake. So it would be very cool to figure it out.
Best Regards,
Geoff.

Red Cross Badge
Hi Fred,
Thanks for posting this image. I will have a look through some books and see if I can figure out what this one might be.
Diane ! If you have a photo of someone wearing the Alpine Red Cross Badge it would be a big deal, you should post it as soon as you can !
There have been several discussions on this badge, I have one of these myself, but no-one seems to believe that it's real.
Best Regards,
Geoff.

A nice picture, but I'm afraid that I can't see a Swastika in the centre. I've seen these badges without the Swastika on display in German museums that are listed from this period, it could also be one of those?
I've seen a few pictures like this over the years, what we need is a nice clear studio portrait showing one to know for sure. I live in hope.....
Cheers

I have a badge like this as well and have read all the debates about its authenticity. Unfortunately I don't think either of these pictures show this particular badge. The badges being worn in the pictures do not appear to have the vertical set of skis that the depicted badge has. It appears the photos show badges that only have the edelweiss.

Look at the second man in posting # 5
Hi guys,
Look at the second man in posting #5. I am sure this is the Alp Rettungsdienst Badge. If I had the photo in hand I think I could squeeze a little more detail out of it as I have a good scanner and graphics software.
I have more information that I am still verifying which hasn't been posted yet.
MfG,
Diane
