Dennis was a wonderful seller. I was concerned about the straps as well. He was up-front and told me what the other collector said. As a result, he lowered his price. Nobody had bid on this helmet on E-bay. The collector probably scared them off. Thanks to the group here, I was able to get a fine helmet for a fine price.

Dennis,
Welcome to the forum. Sorry about your negative e-Bay experience with the "expert" collector. In 50 years of collecting, I have vet-acquired two Police helmets with the "Y" chinstrap. Neither had the leather neck protector. This one is only the fourth I have seen.
Congratulations Captain Emo - you definately have a keeper!

Hi Dennis,
Beware of experts. Very few people collecting now were there at the time and of those, none have seen every possible variation. The best you can do is gather opinions and if they make sense then go with it but all collectors are learning as we go. This forum should prove that to even the most confident among us. Any expert that tells you they have seen it all and that such and such was never done is either a liar or a fool.
There are those among us who have been collecting for many, many years and they do possess an amazing basis for reference and their opinons should certainly be listened to and given substantial value. But the wisest among them will not tell you that something was never done rather that they have not seen it in XX years of collecting and study.
Cheers, Bill Huber

Thanks guys. I don't blame Cpt. Emo -- If I were smart I would have done the same thing -- check out the helmet on forums etc. I guess what threw me was that there were no bids. But on Ebay you can't really display a helmet like that properly. Anyway you were absolutly right in youur advice.
