4 Unissued Feldgendarmerie Gorgets By Assmann

Pick up 4 Unissued Feldgendarmerie Gorgets By Assmann without chains. They appear to have been left where some moisture go to them. Some slight mold on the cardboard and rust on the shield. All are marked with the "A" for Assmann. They still glow in the dark!

So you think they are fakes please tell me & others why instead of making a general statement like that? Most or all of the fakes that I have seen have the fieldgray wool backing and not the cardboard backing like so many originals and yes originals had wool backing also. Please give details and not "I think it's fake" or "I agree"? Does someone have an original Assmann gorget to compare?

You're a little wrong. The original gorgets had a fabric substrate. Also for comparison, the substrate is cardboard.

There are certainly may topics where it can be difficult to find information but this gorget is not one of them. Had you taken any effort to first perform some basic research toward finding the details of this maker? Or do you feel others should be obliged to do the homework for you? There are a number of original examples that are easily found by way of the search function on this forum.

Stive has shown a very nice image of original cardboard backing, now compare that to what you have presented. I will say however that the frontal images of your gorgets show some convincing details now that i am viewing it on a larger monitor today. But as far as I'm concerned if one detail is off then the entire piece becomes questionable.

I would also like more info on these, I was a competing bidder on them and the photos were not great but I thought they looked alright. From the searching I did, I was under the same impression as Horsetrainer on the backing materials. The fronts looked good to me also. What kept me from going any higher was the lack of chains and condition. I also noticed in my search that there were several variations of the middle tab length and position of attatchment. I'm far from an expert but those were of the things I came across while using the websearch.

The cardboard backing looks like someone literally just cut a piece of cardboard and glued it on, I do not have an Assmann example but all the cardboard backed originals I have seen have a smoother appearance to the cardboard and also a pressed fold along the edge, also the detail and crispness in the eagle and wreath are lacking. I understand the storage issue but I personally I would not feel comfortable calling these original.

I did finally find an Assmann marked gorget on the internet. I hope Sean won't be mad if I used his photo. The type of eagle appears to be the same and in the same position on the shield.

The cardboard backing is not glued on an if you look at all four, the cardboard fits the gorgets almost perfectly and the edges are not cut with scissors, but dyed cut to fit just right. Some slight damage to the cardboard, which there is some slight shrinkage.

I am not a fan of any of the shown gorgets. Something tells me something is wrong!
In my opinion anyway the cardboard backing.

I have looked at my Assmann gorget which is the one on page 163 of Gordan Williamson's book, Kettenhund and I have to say the metalwork looks identical. The A mark is there in the centre and and the backing is card albeit mine is very brittle. That said the cutting ,especially around the centre and seems identical so I don't see any red flags on them. I'm no expert but I hope this helps.
