Would this be a Vichy police version?
    High Sn as well, no?

    Thank you.

A number of these appeared on the collectors market several years ago via auction and ebay but unfortunately, I saved the files to an old laptop and unable to access the information.

Regrettably, I am not well versed on these to be able to give a valid opinion however, I can offer a few personal opinions/observations with this particular disc.

IMO the reverse displays the overall quality and appearance reminiscent of reproduction cast discs in that the chain hole is poorly formed, letters are poorly defined and general areas of casting signs etc.

Whether this is a genuine style of disc used by the French National police in WW2 or if this disc itself is a genuine, reproduction or fantasy piece, I cannot say.

Maybe some of our French collectors could chime in?

Pictured is another Vichy police disc recently sold on a mainstream dealers site. The difference in quality between these discs is apparent. But again, whether this is deliberate due to being a different style of badge I do not know.

I have an example of the second disc as shown by SiPo. It too has the micro lettering, of I presume the designer or maker, beneath the wreath on the obverse. The reverse has the same numbering style with a faint line drawn beneath the stamped Arabic numbers (different numbers of course). I got my disc in a trade with a US police badge collector who had picked it up earlier and found it did not really fit into his collection of pin on badges. So, I have had my disc since some time in the 1980s. I agree with SiPo's observations about both badges.

I hope this information is helpful.

          Hi all,

This kind of disc was used in the French police beetwwen 1890's and 1970's during civil wearing service, maybe 1980's (my oncles were policemen betwwen 1940's and 1980's and got it).

IMHO, this discs were WW2 and just post-war used if not it should be marked "Direction Générale de la Sûtreté Nationale". "Police Nationale" is called like that since 1941. More, fransique was replaced by republican symbol in 09.1944.

            Here's your best reference:

-Points to note: seems to be missing engravers signature on bottom right
-Near hole, seems to be missing mfg poincon

It's true but several firms made this kind of disc (and all army and police insignia, ever yet); so, engravers signature or poinçon can be different or just and simply non-existent. Police officers could buy it onb private goldsmith too.

                Hi,

from the start, a direct link would have been better...

                https://www.ebay.fr/itm/124173600795

At least the seller already proposed a fake Croix de Guerre Légionnaire in the past, and - oh surprise ! - (s)he is using the "hidden bids" mode... the mode that make you smell a rat that the seller may be playing with bids put by a different username on eBay that is also him.

                See You

Great investigative work as always Vince.

I was actually talking with someone in Israel about this. Didn't even know about the auction. As you point out, not good signs for the piece itself!

For me, the insigna stays good. Even if the seller is dishonnest ! But , in my opinion, it's too much expensive...
Just a doubt about the "1945" engraved...
