Guys, can you please explain how is possible that member of Heeresgruppe Pionier Schule could get an EK2?

Could be he was in combat and received the award but didn’t get it until he was at the school. What was his rank? Maybe he was promoted to be an instructor at the school.

The only information I have that he has a rank Unteroffizier at the time of getting the EK2. Ceremony took a place on October 1944.
