    schwere Kavallerie Abteilung 3

    hello
recently I adquired a pair of documents from a member of the 3rd kompanie of this abteilung. I'd be interested to get some info concerning this unit. I mean, what kind of vehicles/weapons equipped this abteilung. mainly concerning the third company that was a flak-schwadron.

does this unit had aufklärung tasks?

        Pep,
I have a Soldbuch for a man from Fla.Schwadron/S. Kav. Abt 3. He has an insert that authorizes him to wear the "Schwedter Adlers".

Do either of you know why they were allowed to wear the Schwedter Adler ? According to Lexikon der Wehrmacht that was passed from Reiter Regt 6 to Kradsch ützen Bataillon 3. Was there some connection between K3 and this unit which seems to have been just a collection of "heavy" squadrons from other units.

                      Hello !

Nice set of docs, congrats and thanks for showing !

In addition to what Simon wrote, in early 1945 the 3rd company had been added 4 additional 3,7cm Flak (towed), 1st scan.

Regarding the interesting question by Alanmccoubrey :
Do either of you know why they were allowed to wear the Schwedter Adler? According to Lexikon der Wehrmacht that was passed from Reiter Regt 6 to Kradschützen Bataillon 3. According to a book by Klaus Christian Richter, Die Geschichte der deutschen Kavallerie 1919-1945,
Frhr. Georg von Boeselager reinstatet/allowed the wear of the Schwedter Adler for Kav.Rgt. Mitte and later
for all members of the 3. Kavallerie-Division.

I could not find any direct connection to Reiter-Rgt. 6. The explanation by Richter is, that the idea was to transfer
some of the spirit of the old traditions to these newly formed units, that were scraped together from almost everywhere
(many different units) to give them something to hold on, a symbol, that could create some "esprit de corps".
(That is my interpretation of the 2nd scan, perhaps someone knows more ...)

                      Best regards,

                      Archi

Regarding the Schwedter Adler I would say it was simply a matter of tradition, just as the word is repeated numerous times in the German references shown. With the beginning of the war KR 6 was split into segments to form other units and ceased to exist as a regiment. It had carried the "Schwedter" tradition over from the Reichswehr which had the tradition from the Imperial Army's 2. Brandenburger Dragoner Regiment. Moving forward from KR 6 some of its splinter children carried on the Schwedter Adler tradtion even into the Afrika Korps with Pz. A. A. 33. As these units ceased to exist the tradition was given continued life through other units as have been named. Even in the Bundeswehr the Schwedter Adler has had a continued life, though I cannot say if it is still being worn by any current unit. As long as there is a German army unit wearing golden yellow or pink piping there is a chance for the tradition to flourish again.
