Very nice piece! One of the Stalingrad Divisions I know almost nothing about. Are there any good books or websites on this Division?

    Thanks for sharing,

    Mats

      Photo of the recipient

His death card shows he died in anti partizan operations in Montenegro in November 1943.The 279 th was reconstituted in 1943.There is no Wound badge mentioned on the sterbebild hence logic suggests he contracted a disease and was flown out. There are other bits and bobs including an IAB urkunde. Here is his photo

It is possible he was sheared of his Division as the 297th was the southern most German Division during the Russian offensive and took, together with the Rumanians, the brunt of the force. There is also the possibility he was on leave during the offensive.
          Sadly no way of knowing,

          Nice one nevertheless

            Thanks Mats

Whilst possible I think leave would be an outside bet , more likely some horrible disease.
