In sept 1939 as a major he commanded II./Artillerie Regiment 103. He later Commanded Artillerie Regiment 343 between july 43 and sept 44 so would assume he surrendered at Brest along with the rest of the division

Promoted to Oberst with a seniority date of 1 march 1943
