Thanks Wim and HPL2008. Perhaps we can piece this together. I'll try to find time to post more photos from the album tonight.

Here are the only other potentially helpful photos at identifying the college. Side note: the man at far right wearing an SA Kepi. And one picture of "Napoleon" again for grins.

        Hello !

An interesting topic and some very good contributions already.

Just a few additional remarks :
The formation of the first Burschenschaft is closely connected to the So called "Befreiungskriege".
(The wars against Napoleon from 1813-15).
Both were at the start of a strong movement that strived for German unification.

Therefore, I would not wonder if the young men in the photos with "Napoleon" were visiting a historical battlefield
and a (local) guide explains to them what happened.
Of course, that is only my interpretation, anything is possible.

Here is a general overview on the history of the various "Verbindungen", that might be interesting :
        https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studentenverbindung

        ====================
Regarding a possible place where he studied :
I found a photo of the "Physiologisches Institut" in Giessen, dated 1938.
If you compare it with yours, some windows show a very distinct pattern, which might match the photos from you.
Perhaps someone more experienced with photos, can find a more convincing view.

To further check this, here is a List of Verbindungen in Giessen :
        https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_...in_Gie%C3%9Fen

The colours of Corps Teutonia are listed with : grün-karmesinrot-gold
I do not know whether this changed or how good it matches those shown in the album.
But if you go on the website of that Corps, maybe you can regognize some patterns of their
Korporationshaus with photos in your album.
        https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corps_...ia_Gie%C3%9Fen

I hope this gives some clues for further research.

        Best regards,

        Archi

Archi, you are awesome. I believe you have solved it! I actually feel badly as I accidentally omitted a piece of evidence that confirms your research, but you still pulled it off.

You see, some of the the prints are stamped with the logo of a photography shop in Gießen! That must be where he took his film rolls of snap shots to be developed and printed, and therefore places young Hans-Joachim in Gießen. It is therefore very likely you have identified his school.

I have been keeping that in mind during my own thinking but realize I neglected to post that detail.

And yes, I bet his Studentverbindung was Corps Teutonia as the colors match 100%.

This is a research victory. I owe you a Bier for sure.

I have actually been to Gießen a good number of times when I was stationed in Friedberg and lived in Butzbach.

            Great detective work!

(Not that it's really necessary anymore at this point, but Gießen also checks out in that the university has a veterinary faculty.)
