(IR.456 had been assigned the crossing of the Maas near Boxmeer nearby the village Heijen, where the river makes a substantial curve. A woody stretch on the east-bank presented the Germans with extensive visual coverage, whereas the curve in the river posed the Dutch with the challenge of hampered concentrated defensive fire. The German regiment was reinforced with a battery of heavy 8,8 cm AT guns to crack the bunkers. Nontheless the crossing at Heijen/Boxmeer only succeeded after three attempts).

His wife had to wait a while to recieve a letter from the Wehrmachtauskunftstelle about her husbands Death, signed on 16 oktober 1943 in Berlin.
Before that, she was probably already informed by Walters unit.
