Can anyone tell me what the colored items in the grid mean?

Just like the back of the hands stamps going in--and out-- of shows:

Checked. Cleared. OK. Color/design for security, baffling false marks.

According to the text just to the right of the box with the marks, it says that this document must be presented to the issuing office prior to the 5th of every month for extension of its validity. The 12 boxes are one for each month and the marks are, as already mentioned, validation marks. Odd colors and weird symbols were used as a security measure to prevent counterfeiting or false validation.
