I am going to visit my parents next weekend in Aachen, maybe I´ll find the time to go to Stolberg and take a few pictures of the Donnerberg area for you.

    Best!

    Matthias,

I certainly understand your love for this group...and anything Aachen-related. Please feel free to add photos to this thread if you do get over to Stolberg/Donnerberg.

Note - The CCB attack(s) came from the South towards the Donnerberg. Feldwebel Most's fighting position was in this vicinity.

    Best,
    John

Like you and Matthias, I am particularly interested in the Border Battles between the Germans and Americans, especially in the Aachen and Huertgen Forest area. This is a wonderful group and well worth the wait and investment.

On a related basis, I have a posthumous Purple Heart to a PFC with 36th Armoured Infantry Regimnet, 3rd Armoured Divison. He was sadly KIA by a gunshot wound to the head on September 22, 1944. He was quite likely involved in this fighting or close to it.

It’s the heart shown below on the right. It will someday be part of an article about the fighting in and around Aachen. It is included here for the time being to support your excellent post and a testament to the hard fighting that took place in the area.
      Brian,

OK, now I'm the one "green with envy" after seeing your 3rd Armored PH from 22 Sept. A piece with perhaps a very interesting connection to Feldwebel Most's own history.

I see a 106th ID PH in that photo too...I'm guessing "Bulge-related"? If so, you've stumbled upon my biggest collecting area of interest - The Battle of the Bulge!

      Best,
      John

As long as it took you to finally get this group, you consequently spent a lot of time
to present them so nicely. This is real devotion !

        Best regards,

        Archi

        P.S.: Also a nice addition by Brian R !
        Hi Archi,

Thank you for your kind words. I've got a ton of research offline related to fighting at the Donnerberg and the 9. Panzer Division during this time. I've tried to boil it down and be as concise as a possible. Glad you enjoyed my presentation.

        Best,
        John

Yup, the 3rd Armored guy suffered a tragic end - he was initially listed as MIA but it was confirmed weeks later that he was KIA on September 22nd. Notice his posthumous PH includes an oakleaf cluster - he was wounded in Normandy in early July when elements of his division first saw combat.

And, yes the 106th PH is Bulge related. He was from NYC and was captured by the Germans in the first days of the battle and spent the remainder of the war in a POW camp. They were liberated by Red Army units moving in from the east. He died in the hospital in NYC in 1947, probably from complications related to his service.

These hearts are a tremendous resource for research, and are so tragic when you go through the various documentation related to their death, especially when you see correspondence with their families.

Your RK group is the cream of the crop. I only have one major RK group. It is Luftwaffe and I would give it up in a heartbeat for something like Most's group. Great material and great presentation, John!

                              Hi John,

thanks friend for kind words in the start of this thread. Your luck was that i changed my collection over to the eastern front
Well done research and display, most impressive! By the way, my idea that Most didnt take out two Shermans but instead two tank destroyers, whats your opionion about that after your own research?

                              Enjoy this fantastic group,

                              Petrus

                                Hi Petrus,

It's always hard to be 100% certain, Germans while certainly not perfect, are known for being detailed and thorough ("Ordnung muß sein"). In this case, the TDB document does state "General Shermann", so I'm inclined to believe this to be accurate.

                                9. Panzer was in combat against the US 1st Infantry on 9 August and there were several armor units attached to the division at this time, which included CCA of the 3rd Armored Division. This unit would have Sherman tanks as its main armored component. There were several Tank Destroyer (TD) battalions attached to the 1st ID as well, like 634th TD Battalion. You had forwarded me an after-action-report which stated on 1 TD destroyed and 1 TD captured on that day, so I know this is basis of your theory. I would say definitely possible...but given the specificity of the TDB document listing "General Shermann" and that 9th Panzer had been facing Shermans from the 3rd Armored Division that day, I still believe Most destroyed two Sherman tanks.

                                Best,
                                John
