Is there a way to determine such a possible fraud?

It's a photomontage , but this treatment was very common even during the war. You can always find a wartime photos of knight's holders showing them "wearing" their KC after they died.

Looks to me as if it had a cross shape cut out of the original and a RK actually pasted into the photo..... can we see the whole photo?

Yes, it's a photomantage, but is it pre- or post-45? How could one tell?
