    Robb,

These KZ letters are always fascinating items. I have been collecting them for years. I can read a very little German and French, but that's when it is printed clearly in black and white. My skills are very minimal. So when it comes to the handwriting that is normally found in these letters, I am at a loss.

Here's what I have done over the years. I contact the International Studies Department at a local university and ask them to forward a mass email to this year's exchange students. I offer a small fee, a free meal, and free transportation in exchange for help translating letters like these.

Over the years, I have met some outstanding young people from many European countries. They come to my home and I usually treat them to a nice steak dinner while they work on translating letters or the captions on the back of photos. I have found that $50, a 2-inch thick 36 ounce porterhouse, all the trimmings, a bottle of Willamette Valley Whole Cluster Pinot Noir, and apple pie with ice cream are all the incentive that a person needs to spend a couple of hours translating. All of the exchange students I have met have proven to be very helpful and all-around wonderful people. Unless the handwriting is damaged or just totally illegible, they have always been very adept at translating French, German, Polish, and other languages into English for me. And I've made some great friends along the way. Some of them even keep in touch and have come to share holiday meals with my family throughout the school year. So it is a rewarding experience I think on both sides of the table.

By the way, if you ever decide to part with your KZ letters, please let me know as I'd be interested.

    All the Best,

    Z
