Reserve Infantry Regiment 242 was Saxon, part of the 53rd Reserve Division. It was ground to nothing by the French during the inexorable American advances and its survivors were dispersed as replacements to other less ill-fated divisions in the late summer of 1918.

The "Major" who signed the East Medal and Black Wound Badge was actually a RESERVE officer. Such sloppiness makes it hard to identify officers with common names.

He was the former Hauptmann der Reserve Hermann "Grusche" who won the German Cross in Gold in this unit on 23 June 1942.
