I recently got those two photos of a Luftwaffe Soldier. I rook them for the helmet but it also looks like the Collar Tabs are white with dark piping.

or is it a trick of my eyes?

Seems your question went unnoticed and no one replied.
It's not a trick of your eyes, it's Luftwaffe superior agencies' . EM & NCOs' collar tabs of the Hermann Göring formation were mandated to have a colored edging in the branch of service color until April 2, 1943. Then they were ordered to be plain white.
