Fine Group. If you want to work and research on that Group, the Divisional History from 21.P.D. (Schild-Verlag, von Allmayer-Beck) ist just excellent, very precise.
I fully agree with Lionel, the history of 21. Inf.Div. is very detailed and an excellent read.
According to that book, on the 12.8.44 (date of VWA), the division was defending the Marienburgstellung (see map).
On the 10.8., the Soviet Army launched a major attack and achieved a breakthrough.
A regimental group under Oberst Schwendler (Kdr. Gren.Rgt. 45) was formed (designated as Sch.
in the map), to help to defend the gap between 30. Inf.Div. and the 12. Lw.Feld-Div.
The 21. Inf.Div. itself was sent there soon after and had to face a day of very fierce combat on 12.8.,
where the Div.HQ had to defend itself in close combat. So, no matter, to which unit he was assigned,
he certainly was comitted into heavy combat that day.
