ink and paper advice

need some tips on how best to conserve a cardboard tag attached to a sample of insignia. it is written by hand in what is now a brownish-colored ink on heavy paper. i will post a foto as soon as i can. i have no experience with paper items.

really need to see it in order to get you the best advice..

I've seen a small paper item attached by a string to the item. What someone did was to cut the exact size acid free board,,back up the tag with it then take mylar and custom cut an envelope that went over all of it...
