Help needed to Id a Vet officer, unit, a DKiG holder

    Hello !

As I am really bad in identifying uniforms/ranks/awards from photos, I hope
I can get some support. Any help would be greatly appreciated !

I received a lot of 80+ photos, related to the career of a Veterinary Officer, ~1940-44 (at least).

The photos are all loose, most of them undated and I would like to get them
in a sensible sequence, try to identify the units he served in, and try to
follow the different steps of his career (and perhaps even find his name).

What I think I know from the photos so far :
In France, 1940 he was a Gefreiter in a Veterinary company (at the end Uffz.)
(Likely he served in 25. Inf.Div. (perhaps 50. ID)).
He was most likely in Russia as well, perhaps until 1943, but I'll leave those parts for later,
to concentrate on my most important questions :

From the photos below, is it possible to say :
1.) Which rank he had in 1944 ?

2.) Is it possible to ID his awards (small picture in the last group) ?

3.) Can anyone make a guess on his unit in Croatia, July 1944 ?
(I read Savski Marof (?!), W of Zagreb, and Schloß Vladuk (?!))
Which unit could that be ?

4.) From the pictures shown here, it looks to me he was a Vet. Offc. within a regimental HQ,
not in a veterinary company. Any oppinions on that ?

5.) I think the Officer on the left of the first set of fotos, has been awarded a DKiG.
    a) Is that correct ?!
    b) Is it possible to identify him (and does that help to ID the unit) ?!
    c) The officers next to him : Lt. Hoppe (Adj.), Oblt. ? (and the unit ??), Lt. ?? und ich.

6.) Finally, some of the writing is hard to decipher. Any help on that would be great !

Many thanks in advance for any small input !

    Best regards,

    Archi

              Hello PanzerElite !

Many thanks for your help !
On some of the topics, I had similar ideas (Hptm. in 1944), for others I had no clue at all.
              That is excellent help !

I really hope for help on the still open questions :
              - Is that a DKiG holder in pic #1 ?
              - Which unit could that be in July 1944 near Savski Marof ?
              - Schloss Vladuk : Which location/is there a different name today ?

Thanks in advance and best regards,

              Archi

Remember that a vet with the rank insignia of a hauptmann is a Stabsveterinär
Collecting German award documents, other paperwork and photos relating to Norway and Finland.

                  Hello Simon !

Thanks for pointing to that !

I found this web site, which has a lot of infos on the details of
the typical career of such a Veterinär Offizier :
                  http://www.kerstinullrich.de/Fam2-Kr.../Vetkomp3.html

I am still at sorting the other fotos.

Anybody an oppinion/idea on the DKiG officer or on Schloss Vladuk ?!

                  Thanks and best regards,

                  Archi

                    Hello !

With the help of several forum members, I made some real progress in understanding and sorting
the many photos in this lot and possibly also was able to identify his unit.

According to his career, I do now know, that he was :
                    - Gefreiter in the campaign in France 1940
                    - in July, 1940, he was promoted to Uffz.
                    - In Croatia 1944, he was Stabsveterinär (equivalent to Hauptmann)

There are a few points, where I would still hope for some additional help :
                    a) There is a bunch of photos made in winter, where I do not know, which timeframe, which location
and what rank he had at that time
                    b) then there are some photos made in 1941, where I would also like to know, whether it is possible
to identify his rank (and perhaps his award).
(I have an idea, but I really would like to confirm this).
                    c) Then there are two photos taken in April 1943, where I would like to know his rank and awards (if possible).

It would be great, if some of these questions could be clarified. I will then try to present the
most interesting photos of this lot of a veterinary officer in the correct sequence.

Many thanks in advance for any input (translation of the handwriting would also very helpful !),

Next set of Photos, likely taken at the same time :
1st photo : Kompanie Appell, he is the second one in the row (2. von links bin ich) :
Is it possible to say what rank he could have hold at that time ?
A transcription of the writing could be useful as well.
                      Thanks.

Here are 3 photos, two of them taken in May, 1941, in France, the third one I would assume taken later in Russia.
The main questions remain the same : is it possible to identify the rank/award ?
2nd question : Is the man on the left always the same (Ob.Vet. Dr. Hasselbeck) ?

Last group of photos for today :
Both taken in April 1943 :
Standard question : rank and awards of the officer on the right.
Some help on translation of the handwriting would also be appreciated !

" San-Feldwebel DOBLER aus ..... und ich. Aufgenommen April 44 Str.Wy". In my opinion means "Stary Wy........"

"Oberarzt SIEG und "FALKO", der Soldatenhund, der ........ überall meine Abteilung begleitete. April 43"

                              Hello Lionel !

Many thanks for your input ! Very helpful !
It turns out, that Oberarzt Dr. Sieg was affiliated to II./Art.Abt. 198, as was Vet. Dr. Ziegler for some time.
With your help (and the help of other members) and further research on the locations and officers involved,
I am now very confident, that "my soldier" served in the 98. Inf.Div., at least from 1940 to mid 1944.

If that is correct, the location mentioned, should be somewhere N of Spas-Demensk. I was thinking
very similar as you, Stary W.... something, but couldn't find any village /location with that name in that area.
It remains unclear. The problem with these photos is, that he often likes to abbreviate locations,
                              e.g. with Fr.=Frankreich,R.=Russsland, etc.
My current guess for Str. Wy. would be : Str.[ebki] /[area] Wy[asma], which could be about
                              12km NNW of Spas-Demensk, ~3km S of Lasinki, where 98. Inf.Div. was holding positions in March/April 1943.
But many other abbreviations could be posssible as well ...

Anyway, with your confirmation of this photos related to 98. Inf. Div., I can concentrate on his
promotions and his awards, to finally get and present the (almost) full story.
I have already collected much more information, than I would have ever expected possible from
an almost undated and random group of photos !

Many thanks to all and best regards,

                              Archi
