If I have done my research right I believe this soldier was wounded and awarded the Iron Cross for his participation during the Battle of Sevasttopol.

Wounds in action 8 June 1942. Awarded 21 June 1942
EKII awarded 25 July 1942.

Agreed. Nice group, and the EK is quite likely related to the wound.
