    Hi Max,
Yes, in a purist sense, you are correct in what you say. Yes, I do and did understand your point.

Realistically, however, Curt has it in hand and is unable to tell, and without other stamps in his possession he has to rely on a visual comparison. Not unusual in this hobby. By the time you have this kind of item in your hand from a dealer who cannot recognize a stamp and is paid as if it is hand-signed, you have blown your money - so we rely on a visual assessment.

I'll modify my statement, then, from 'definitely' to write I strongly believe based on my visual assessment that it looks like a stamp based on the evidence I have of examples of other Rommel stamps which exhibit strikingly similar form. That should cover your semantic concerns, I hope.

I think someone comparing the example I gave with Curt's can readily accept the view that they are both stamps - I have several other examples I used for comparison and they all indicate to me from my comparison that Curt has what looks like a stamped Rommel sig. I can add a disclaimer that my view is only based on a visual assessment, of course.

I hope Praubal is reading this.

Thanks all for your input. I did not pay for an "original" signature but thought I would check to make sure. I don't often get into autographs because of the issues involved. I bought it from the aspect of postcard collecting.

        Thanks very much
        Curt

          Brian,
The Wildenstein Insitute is based in Paris. It is one of very few art establishments recognised as an authenticating authority. There is great rivalry between such establishments. If you Google it, you will see that even such venerated authorities have disagreements and are mired in scandal. Sadly, without authentication from one of the recognised authorities, a work of art is greatly reduced in value.
          Max.
