The Soviets did the same thing (to prove that the SS were not "supermen" after all):

Interesting photos. It seems clear the photographers in some of them proped up or rotated the SS helmets for the runes to be well visible.

This is most definitely an original wartime photo taken by Tony Vaccaro.
Who I had the pleasure to meet 2 yrs ago when he was promoting the HBO documentary about his WW2 photos. Very humble man.

I'm collecting anything related to the towns Castricum and Bakkum during WWII.
Also soldbucher from 116pzdiv. And 1944-1945 eastfront pockets, kampfgruppe and Oder front.

Here is another graphic shot, taken by Robert Capa and showing machinegunner Raymond Bowman who was killed in the city of Leipzig by (supposably) a German sniper just seconds before the picture was taken. Not a close-up like the other pictures, but dramatic and sad anyway (the reflection in the fresh blood always gives me the shivers):

Interestingly he is wearing a version of the Luftwaffe LKp Flight Helmet.

What makes this ID as SS? Is there a location associated with this photo?
