original Goring art or copy of original...?

It is my personal view this item is a copy from an original piece by an artist Schuppich, who did many postcards and other pieces of Goring in particular.

For confirmation of this, the seller would appreciate views from others on this forum as to whether this is an original piece, or a copy....

I offer the attached pics as the item was removed from it's frame at the sellers request, so it could be viewed on it's own...

There are several details to support my thoughts, but want to have your opinions for the sellers benefit.

does it look like an original work of art of a photo'd copy for publication.....note the border edge from the photographing....IMO....

This sketch appears to be done with charcoal, and if any of it can be erased or smudged, then it's probably an 'original" piece. Try an area that does not damage the total portrait...

Many thanks for your comments James....It sure 'appears' to be on sketch paper with the 'bumpy' appearance, however there is no smudging, even an eraser attempt in the lower left hand corner did not remove anything (and that was done before I took the picture)....the paper it is on, is print quality paper, smooth both sides, not sketch type paper with a rougher type surface that would show as 'bumpy'...

Well, that sounds like you're dealing with a print and not an original charcoal sketch. Nowadays there is a fixative that can be sprayed onto charcoal drawings that protects them against smudging...which is the bane of charcoal artists...but I don't believe that was available in the 1940s. Also, as you observed, this does not appear to be the kind of paper used by charcoal artists; paper with a smooth finish does not work well with that medium, but grainy paper does.

I hope this exchange was helpful to you.
