    interesting signpost photo

    hello all this one came today amoungst a bunch of loose photos I bought off Eban. I tried locating Szeltzo by internet search and came up empty. Any thoughts on that and also the unit HG sign in the foreground would be welcome! thanks

    I know the signpost, half-readable arrow sign reads Staraja-Russa. Szeltzo seems to be a pretty common name, I haven't been able to locate it.

      Possible candidates (not all listed):

      This one might be a good candidate?

      Now it's time to do some homework

        Well Akira, lets see if I am getting close..

        I know some of the cities and towns names were changed/modified after the great patriotic war. If this Staraja-Russa is the same city as in in 1941/42 then i would venture to guess the Sel'tso in modern Russia stands a good chance that this is the szeltzo listed on sign. and given that the marker appears to read 10Km to Szeltzo and the the sign for Staraja-Russa is pointing in the "northerly" direction I would put the location along or near the river which name I have yet to find. there are a few towns along that river, Gontsy, and redtsy being just two. Seeing how there appears to be a rail line in Gonsty and figuring that there might also have been a rail line in 41/42 there as well. I would say that might just be the area.
        i will have to look into some of my books to check if I can find if the front was nywhere near this area during the winter and maybe that would narrow it down a little..

              Finally remembered where I saw this one, here it is.

              <img src="http://www.history.jp/images/Wegweiser-Szeltzo-Pola.jpg">

              Szeltzo is 16km from this signpost. 15km to Pola.

                  Nice photo Akira, much clearer than mine.. Yours is the opposite side from my photo. There is a Pola on the last link listed by you an it roughly corresponds in km to the pola/Szeltzo roadsigns. So the location of this roadsign stands a good chance of being in the town of Berljukovo, Muchino, or one of the towns in the immidiate area.

                    It appears to be close to the city of Scheisse?

                      Can somebody decipher the poem or limerick under the soldier? My German is bad but not so bad that I can't tell you that Scheisse is no town...

                      I believe a scheisse haus to be a latrine or outhouse? I look forward to a translation by one of our German-fluent members.

                            Rykalowa (Rikalovo) is http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp....8667&size=big.

                            On the map Rykalovo is about 12km away from Pola. The sign post must be pretty close to Rykalovo (because there is no km)<strike>, or alternately, possibly close to the Vaasill'evscina crossroad to the southwest of Rykalowa</strike>.

                              Akira, I think you are very very close.. I didn't even look for Rykalovo, that didn't figure into my thinking... It is nice to have a close Geographical location for this signpost. I am still going to try and figure aout the HQ sign that is another puzzle for me...Mike
