I recently acquired these and was wondering what boat this was. I know that it is a later boat as it has Flak Guns. I also thought it interesting that there were Luftwaffe Soldiers on board and I am assuming they manned the Flak Guns. Many thanks in advance to all those that reply!

A wonderful set of photos, Mwilies -- many thanks for sharing them! The Kriegsmarine has never been a focus of my study and collecting, but the boat in the pix appears to be a Type IXC or IXC/40 as detailed in the fine list provided by Corporal077. My only first-hand experience of a U-boat was in visiting the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, where U-505 -- the only U-boat in the USA -- is fully preserved and lovingly maintained...indoors and out of the water!

Hi, I know the U-596 its type VIIC and its different like on this photos but please look on the conning tower on the first picture - what do you see - The guy with water buckets.

I'm sure I'm way over my head here, but according to the chart linked by Corporal077 in Note #6, only the Type IXC and IXC/40 were produced with the lower aft AA platform extension attached to the tower...
