    Tank ID

    Hi All,

Can anyone identify this tank? Doesn't look German to me, but I am admittedly no Armored expert! The image is on a Ham Radio Operator's QSL card, located in the Netherlands.

    Thanks in Advance,
    Mark

Looks like a postwar modified sherman turret, added longer gun and therefore counterweight. Also the explaining sign seems to show a sherman tank.

Maybee better post in the Achtung Panzer section?

Hmm don't be too quick with the Firefly answer

Me thinks this is off a M4A1 Us with the 76mm gun with the much later post war muzzle break with two rings.

Anyway it is the M4A1 turret as that is the only one with the side hatch like that.

One would need to get a very accurate measure on barrel to tell them apart sometimes. If the lower half was there we could get a better idea as the firefly had the forward ball MG plated over while the US version didn't

I posted it on the Achtung Panzer Forum per suggestions. We'll see what they have to say.

That looks to me to be a Firefly turret with 17 pounder, loader's hatch and turret bustle for the radios. I am a little confused by the contention of the M4A1 being the only Sherman with the "side hatch", if you mean the spent cartridge ejection hatch surely all types of Sherman had that ?

Yep those photos confirm in it was a firefly turret.

The second ring is the post holder.

There is no applique armour on it so it may never of been part of a tank.
