Photos of my grandfather with nice details

    Hello all,

when doing closeups of photos you've seen over and over again, sometimes you find nice details. Now here's two pics of my grandfather who served in the Berlin police and during WW2 in the Feldgendarmerie (I had another thread on him: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ad.php?t=67076 ). The first pic was taken between 1936 and 1939; it shows him as member of some course (any ideas about this?):

And finally, the political dimension ! There's a guy on the left side, sporting this (maybe wrong forum? ):

Very nice picture, I like the close ups! Good to see a picture of the full SS membership!

Ok, the second pic. Taken between August and November 1939, maybe in Poland. My grandfather has been transferred from the Police to Wehrmacht Feldgendarmerie (military police).

That's him, kneeling next to the commanding officer, wearing a "Deutsche Wehrmacht" armband (was this usual practice for the military police?):

Now the details: That seems to be a railway wagon to the left. I'm not sure, is this a Polish eagle on it? What do you think?

Second from left, this guy wears a Spanish Cross (did they have policemen in the Legion Condor?):

And finally, the SS joins in again: Look at the guy on the left, standing a little apart:

Thanks for sharing these interesting photos greatly appreciated, even more so with your family tie.

As a side note, what scanner/photo editing program do you use to get such good close ups?

                          Thanks
                          Regards

I would agre with Si; great photos and made even nicer knowing the family connection.

I would agree that the eagle on the railway wagon is Polish.

The guy with the Spanish Cross would not have served as a policeman in Spain, but as a member of the Armed Forces I would think? I have never heard of Police involement in the Spanish Civil War?

The "Deutsche Wehrmacht" armband was worn by anyone serving in an armed capacity but not a member of the Army. This would not make him a member of the Military Police. Members of the RAD wore the same armband when at the front.

                            Cheers, Ade.

PS I cannot get your link to the original thread to work.

                              Simon,
I just use the standard scanning program that came with my Epson 1670. The closeup have been done with about 800 dpi.

                              Adrian,
you are correct, they are all wearing police, not Wehrmacht uniforms! Then the photo might have been taken in the very early days of the war, I think? Certainly after April 1939 (when the Spanish Cross was instituted). My grandfather was transferred to the Feldgend./military police in August 1939. Maybe this was taken before? (But if the eagle IS Polish? ) Or maybe they wore the old uniform in the early days of the war?

I have lots of photos of him in Wehrmacht military police uniform. Here's one, probably taken in France around 1941/42.

                              Regards
                              Chris

PS. I agree the guy with Spanish Cross should have been in the army in Spain. The link works now.
