    Invasion of Holland

    Dear members,

I would like to share with you some pictures of the german invasion of Holland and my hometown Dordrecht in May 1940. Some I've never seen before. These pictures are all in my collection.

"De Tweede Tol" Dordrecht, German dropzones near de Moerdijk Bridges.
Dutch POW's are watching the spectacle as german supplies are being dropped.

The POW's where captured in the early moments of the battle due to a lack of ammunution and probably belonged to the I-17 Regiment Artillery.

In the upper left corner you can see the Junkers transportplanes fly away.

German paratroopers on the dike. On the left is a civilian car converted to an ambulance, something that happened very often in the may days of 1940.
Bottom left are some more Dutch POW's.

Dutch barracks taken by the Fallschirmjäger. Note the parachutes and cargo containers also at the "Tweede Tol".

Leutnant Graf von der Schulenburg on the left with a map consulting the situation. On the right with the visor cap is the commander of Fallsch reg 1, Bruno Brauer.

second photo of the same situation. Again Leutnant Graf von der Schulenburg and Bruno Brauers adjutant; Hauptmann Rau.

Arrival of reconnaissance units of the 9th panzer division on the 12th of May 1940 at the "Tweede Tol".
The panzers would arrive a day later.
From left to right: Hauptmann Rau, Oberst Bruno Brauer and Leutnant Graf von der Schulenburg

Oberst Bruno Brauer and Hauptmann Rau very happy to see the releave forces.

The public cemetry in the town of Dordrecht in 1940.
On the back of the picture is written: Heldenfriedhof für unser Fallschirmjäger in Dordrecht - Holland 1940.

    The buried are:
Gefreiter Knaute, obergefreiter Bormann and Gefreiter Niemeyer belonged to 5 AR/ 22 and where killed by a Dutch corparal with a machine gun. They died near the Dordrecht central train station.

Gefreiter Hans Lausen belonged to 10/FJR 1 and died due to combat in "Wieldrecht".

Schütze Deutsch and Oberleutnant Mann belonged to IR 72 of the 7th flying corps. landed near Rotterdam and reassigned to the Dordrecht area of fighting. They both died near the Railway where heavy fighting took place.

Gefreiter Adam Kettler belonged to 11/ FJR 1 and was probably heavily wounded or killed in action.

German propaganda photo of Fallsch. reg 1 near the Moerdijk bridges.
In the real event the paratroopers would have never jumped so near to the bridges because of Dutch anti aircraft guns and the serious danger of landing into the river.

One of the River bunkers near the Moerdijk bridges in "Willemsdorp". Obviously captured due to the efforts of Fallschirm. Reg 1 . Note the bullet holes by the windows.

I have another picture on the way of the shooting of the German Propaganda film : "Sprung in den Feind". It shows German paratroopers landing near the bridges. I'll post it when I have it.

further on I am always looking for more original photo's to add to my collection. So If you have anything for sale please let me know. I'm Always looking for deathcards , photo's or other documents concerning Dordrecht/ Moerdijk of Fallschirmjäger regiment 1 or dutch troops and so on .

I've mentioned this on this forum before, but my dad was from the Netherlands. He was born on May 9, 1930, so the German invasion happened the day after his 10th birthday. I don't recall where he lived then, but he remembered the noise of planes overhead, and seeing Fallschirmjäger jump to capture an airfield near his home. He must have experienced views somewhat like these (though not the more overt daylight propaganda elements).

Very interesting MarcRikmenspoel ! Your father must have lived in Den Haag ( The Hague ) or Rotterdam.

In Den Haag was the Ypenburg airfield were paratroopers landed.
In Rotterdam there was the Waalhaven airport were also paratroopers landed.

Must have been a scary view of foreign soldiers invading his country.

                Thank you for your reply

13: Probably also a propaganda picture near Moerdijk . Considering the angle of the photo and the smoke this is likely to be a staged picture for the movie Sprung in den Feind.

14: Another picture of the Moerdijk bridges . On the right side there are probably bunkers if you look closely.

15: Photograph of a member of the 22 ID. You can see the "Great church" of Dordrecht clearly visible from the bridges of Zwijndrecht where hard fighting took place between Dutch troops and German Paratroopers.

Driveway of the Moerdijk traffic bridge

Fallschirmjäger field graves in Dordrecht. Heavy damaged buildings in the background, most likely shelled by Dutch artillery.

Another two field graves , not of paratroopers but most likely Luftlande truppe or airborne troops which came to Dordrecht als reinforcements from Rotterdam.

German panzer III at the driveway of the Moerdijk traffic bridge. The track has been destroyed and the tank seems to have minor damage on the front. Maybe damaged by artillery fire.

Large convoy of German vehicles at the Moerdijk bridge. Most likely support units of the 9th panzer division. Don't know if anyone recognizes the divisional mark on the truck with the two mg 34's?

Radfahrer company on the traffic bridge of Moerdijk.

German troops on the march from Oosterhout to Rotterdam, most likely in the area of Dordrecht near the Moerdijk bridges.

German soldier in the town of Zwijndrecht after de Dutch capitulation. You can see the town of Dordrecht . Also something is burning.

                    Added some new photo's.

I'm still looking for more Holland photo's ! Please contact me if you have any from the area of Dordrecht or Moerdijk or Rotterdam!.
If you are not sure, just send me a scan and I can probably recognize some locations.
