There were actually three similar markers at Dachau. One was made of wood and stood at Reichsschatzmeister-Schwarz-Platz (known today as John-F-Kennedy-Platz).
The post featured in the well known image taken at Dachau was integrated into the outer wall of the larger camp zone - not the boundary of the Häftlingslager (prisoner camp) and almost 1km from the actual KZ. It directed east - toward the main camp entrance. The other directed towards the western entrance and the SS drill area.
I was asked recently if any form of the signs at Dachau is extent, but no, the grounds of the Bavarian Riot Police now cover the former area in question, as indeed they have done for some time. Prior to their presence, US forces occupied the zone of interest post war. The wall which had the sign post is incomplete today and the sign is missing.
The image was taken by SS photographer Friedrich Franz Bauer, during the visit of Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, Stellvertreter des Führers (the Führer's Deputy) Rudolf Heß and Himmler's chief adjutant Karl Wolff.
