2) The 3D photos are great but is there any way to save these on the PC and still see the 3D effect on the screen?
3) 7 photos are missing (3, 21, 29, 71, 83 and 93). Any idea where I could get these from ?
1) I wouldn't bother. My copy is much worse than yours but the pics are in great shape. The album looks kinda cool in its distressed state. If it really bothers you keep an eye out for a better copy, it is the most commonly encountered of the raumbild albums.
2) Scan them. The 3d effect is still do-able if you go cross eyed, hurts after a while though.
3) Your best bet, other than buy a complete album, is to get scans of the missing cards and print them out on good quality photo-card. It is highly unlikely that you could track down 'exactly' the ones you are missing.

Hello Terry,
I am glad to see someone else is interested in these German 3D books. There are quite a few from the Third Reich era, some more rare than others. I have 6 of them:
Der Kampf im Westen (France campaign)
Die Soldaten des Fuhrers im Felde (Poland campaign)
Fliegen und Siegen (Luftwaffe)
Die Kriegsmarine (Navy)
Grossdeutschlands Weidergeburt (Austria takeover - I have 24 spare images from this series if anyone is interested, including a close-up of an avuncular Adolf Hitler greeting a child)
Der erste Grossdeutschlande Reichskriegertag (Veterans day celebrations with pics of all the Party bigwigs)
Other titles include the 1936 Olympics, Mussolini's state visit, Germanic art, industry, etc.
They are a fascinating way to look at history -- some of the images absolutely leap off the page at you!! The books can sometimes can be found on eBay.
The images can be reprinted using a good quality scanner with minimal loss of quality.
By the way, you can actually make your own 3D images using 2 disposable cameras mounted side by side. All you need is a suitable viewer to keep you from going cross-eyed.

Terry,
While I sort of understand David C's thoughts (post 18) regarding keeping the book/casket in disrepair, I can't agree.
I see my role as owner of this kind of artifact as being that of a temporary job. The item will be here after I'm gone. I feel that my responsibility is to conserve for the future the physical condition of the book. This is why I suggested you go to a rare book dealer who can point you in the direction of a restorer who is skilled in repairing damage bindings of rare publications. After all, we want to handle our books from time to time and I can promise you that the bad binding will not heal and will only get worse with time.
While Kampf in Westen is a common title, I simply think that in the hands of a competent expert, the artifact will be better off repaired. I don't really equate this with repainting a helmet or similiar item.
This is just my feeling.
Cheers.

Ramon, thanks for taking the time to scan the photos I need. I expected these to be really special and to have been sold or kept by one of the previous owners in the last 60 years but obviously not......boring photos amongst many amazing shots in the set. I will try to find a book restorer to, at least, explore the possibility. Not many of them in my area so I may need to wait 'till I can get to London town.

A fair comment Ramon.
My copy bears the scars of a number of previous, admittedly amateur, restoration attempts. I like it just the way it is which is fortunate as I think professional restoration would be uneconomical; what do you think?
You do realise guys that the twin images aren't identical? For Terry to reproduce a card he would need both images for the full effect.

Hey Dave,
Thanks for the comments. Yes, you're correct when you mention that the individual pictures are different. This is to account for parallax so that the stereoscopic effect is achieved.
Good to see another collector of these fascinating items. I have all the RPT titles, the Paris exhibition, the Hauptstadt der Bewegung, the Reichskriegertage,
Germany's Rebirth, the Deutsche Plastik title and others. They are super.
Concerning the repair. I know that I'm lucky in that I have a professional restoration expert near to where I live and that my relationship to him permits a very nice cost structure to my benefit. I still feel that if you can afford it and the cost doesn't bankrupt you, restoration is the way to go. This is a decision for each of us to make based upon the unique circumstances each of faces.
Again, good to see other album collectors in the fray.
