The tank on the first pic, can it be a PanzerKampfwagen 17R, based upon the French Renault FT?

The tank appears to be a Renault NC-31 with the 3.7cm main gun.
edit: What looks like a gun barrel in the image, may actually be part of the roof line of the building behind the tank.
If this is the case, then the tank would have a 13.2mm machine gun.

It's not a Renault NC31, just look at the front wheel sprocket. The NC31 has a smaller sprocket than shown on the photo. Therefor I guess it's a Renault FT-31 (or as Beutepanzer 17R).

The long barrel is indeed a roofline of the building and I think the barrel/machinegun can't be seen because the turret is turned with the barrel side towards the building, almost turned 180 degrees, showing the backside hatch on the turret on the frontside of the photo.

Thanks for straightening that out Marcel, I was always under the impression that the NC series had the large drive sprocket and the steel cored tracks with rubber pads installed in an attempt to improve speed and mobility. I must have garnered my information from the wrong sources.

No worries Bern, I've been comparing lots of pics and tank info myself now because initially I was also in doubt. Makes it interesting to gather lots of information and photo material to solve this little mystery

Thanks for id on tank, this photo from from FJ who served in Poland as here and then Crete. Did this tank serve in Polish or Greece army? Regards Graeme

The Yugoslavian army used this tank in the early 40's. The Germans used it as a Beutepanzer and gave it their own identification, Panzerkampfwagen 17R during the war. The French of course used it. It was used inbetween the wars by the Spanish in Marocco, The Russians used it against the Fins and the Fins against the Russians inbetween the two wars. Greece did not use this one. They tested one for their army but no orders were placed.

thanks, what about the cities shown in photos 1 and 4, both harbours with sailing boats. I think the 1st photo could be the main water front street in Trapani sicily? The FJ travelled through this city on his way to Africa. The 4th photo looks more like an aerial view. Both are on photos of the same type, could be like a 'postcard' photo? regards graeme

On the first photo is Renault M26/27. Few on them was used by Polish and Yugoslavian armies.

the soldiers on the right in both photos are they Italian soldiers? Do they use colony soldiers such as north africans in their army? regards graeme

Unknown town is city of Split, Croatia( ex Yugoslavia). Both photos.


Considering soldier photos, on the first one are soldiers of Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Probably taken in Yugoslavia.

Second one are Italian soldiers and photo is taken somewhere on the Adriatic coast, between Split and Dubrovnik.
