This is one of the most common photo-portraits of Hitler published by Heinrich Hoffmann...perhaps THE most common. The photograph was taken probably in late 1935 and was used extensively in a number of different versions. The original pose was of Hitler waist-high standing with his right hand on his hip and his left forearm resting on a chair back, and other versions of this pose included bust-high and a facial portrait such as this one. The facial portrait was the subject of a postage stamp series in 1937. Many versions of this pose include a facsimile of Hitler's full signature, and I believe this is one of those versions. Color and B/W editions of all versions of this pose were very widely published.

A close examination of the facial portrait discloses that it is undoubtedly a fine example of the photographer's art, and certainly Hitler considered this when he made Hoffmann a cultural "Professor."

I disagree - I would say it's not a facsimile. This looks to me to be a handwritten crayon pencil signature and if I were to assess it without physical examination, I'd lean heavily toward it being authentic.

I bow to your greater experience and knowledge, Max. Many years ago I bought a poster-sized edition of this photo produced by Hoffmann and it includes an AH signature on the bottom margin. I have seen others since then. My assumption has always been that this was a printed signature...but it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong. And since I still have that photo, I would be overjoyed!

        Cheers,

It just looks like graphite - I could be wrong of course and only physical examination would confirm that. I think a facsimile would appear more solid.
