Handling documents - gloves or no gloves?

I was under the impression that one should wear cotton gloves when handling documents, photos etc to avoid the transfer of body oil. Apparently that view is changing in the archival community.

    For example:

I think of you handle a common "normal" document as a Wehrpass or a Soldbuch or an usual

award document and you have clean fingers you must not use gloves. But if you handle a very

pecial rare and unique document you should use gloves.
